Here's what Casey wrote to us:
I am the mother of two very wonderful, lovely, successful young women. I am very close to both of them but have a hard time not letting their ups and downs in life rule my emotions. Because we are so close and talk often, I know when things are going well in their lives and also when they are not. When their lives are in turmoil, I find it very hard to set their concerns or heartache aside and to go about my own life. When they were young, it was my responsibility to guide and support them. Now that they are on their own, there is nothing more I can or need to do for them other than to listen to them when they need to talk. However, I do not seem to be able to set the worry and concern aside and while I need to let them live their lives, I feel the pressure to try to make everything right for them.
How do I lend support and love to them but at the same time not take on their concerns or heartaches when there is nothing more I can do for them. In other words, how do I stop being such a mom and move on to being a supportive friend who does not take on all of their worries? Thank you.
